FRCC E-Bike Policy

E-Bikes are here to stay! Their technology has advanced making them more affordable, lighter, and available in many configurations. E-Bikes have become popular with commuters, recreational riders, and people who wish to experience (or keep experiencing) the joy of cycling--but desire a little help! And they offer the opportunity to keep lifetime enthusiasts “on the road” longer.

E-Bikes put more bikes on the road. This helps increase awareness of cyclists by motorists and others—a very nice added benefit! And E-bikes are FUN!

E-Bikes are made with a variety of operating systems and designs. Some require pedaling to move forward. Some have a throttle that enables a rider to ride without pedaling (is that actually a Motorcycle??). Some look like motorcycles, are HUGE, and weigh over 70 lbs. Others look like traditional road bicycles and are under 30 lbs. Some have a top-speed of 20 mph, others 28+ mph.

As one may imagine--the style of a bike dictates its performance (starting / stopping / handling / speed).

A FRCC group ride’s priority is always Safety. Riders in a group are often very close to each other and a great deal of skill--and trust in the skills of others around you--is necessary. Bikes in the group should be of similar design and capabilities to avoid dangerous situations.

Therefore, the FRCC policy on E-bikes being used at FRCC Group Rides is as follows:

  • Only Pedal-assist E-bikes (No Throttle) are allowed

  • Only Drop-Bar, Road Style (traditional road bike design) are allowed (No Flat-Bar, Hybrid, Cargo, MTB or other design)

  • E-Bike riders must demonstrate the skills necessary for safe group riding and adhere to normal group riding etiquette

  • E-Bike riders must also have the skills and tools necessary to conduct any roadside repair they may need (for example, some E-bikes require special tools to repair a flat tire)
